HLCS is using a four day rotating schedule A-D days.  I will have the children record what their special is in their agendas so that it will not be necessary for you to keep track of the letter day.

Please help your child remember their gym clothes.

Snack and Water Bottles

The children should bring water bottles to keep on their desks.  It is not necessary to purchase a water bottle.  A recycled plastic bottle is fine.  We do not have a water fountain in the room.  Too much instructional time is lost by students traveling out to the hall for drinks.

The children may bring a healthy snack to eat in the afternoon.  Healthy snacks such as fruit or crackers provide the energy they need to get through out long afternoons as lunch is served at 11am.

Homework

Each student will receive an agenda.  It is essential that students bring the agenda home each day and return it the following morning.  All homework assignments will be recorded each day.  Each student receives one agenda free of charge.  There is a fee if an agenda needs to be replaced.

Students will have homework every Monday through Thursday.  If your student says they do not have any homework or does not bring home their agenda, this should be a signal to you to ask questions because homework will always be assigned.  Due to the structure of the Saxon Math program, students may have math assignments over the weekend.

In addition to regular homework assignments, students will be expected to complete any uncompleted class assignments at home.  These will be stamped with the word Homework and will be noted in the agenda.  If a child does not complete their homework, they will complete it during recess or after school.

Please set aside time each night to check your child’s homework.  Please sign the agenda to indicate that it is completed.  I understand that occasionally you or your child may have a question about homework.  Please just write a note in their agenda.  I check it daily and will respond as quickly as possible.

Home-School Correspondence

Outside of bus or dismissal notes and excuses (which must be sent to the office), please use the agenda to communicate with me. This is a streamlined system that ensures notes will not be lost in transit to and from school.  If you would rather communicate with me through e-mail, my  e-mail address is lnichol2@nycap.rr.com.  This is my home e-mail address.  I check this each night and will respond to you as quickly as possible.

Testing Procedures

You will be notified of any social studies or science tests in advance.  As outlined in the Saxon Math letter, math tests occur every five lessons.  All tests, with the exception of spelling, need to be signed and returned.  This is considered a homework assignment.
